Overview

THE VIRTUAL CLIENT EXPERIENCE

Students can now get real-life, real-time therapy experience with The Virtual Client Experience.   The simulation is delivered in real-time and puts learners in direct contact with a trained simulation expert who assumes the role of a realistic live client who is seeking treatment for a variety of real mental health situations.

Learners can practice asking open ended questions, active listening skills, make therapeutic recommendations, and develop their diagnostic abilities in an authentic, online telebehavioral health session.

The simulation provides invaluable experience and feedback in a safe, educational environment.

THE VIRTUAL CLIENT EXPERIENCE

HOW IT WORKS

Students and instructors use virtual meeting rooms to conduct virtual patient simulations for a variety of pedagogical experiences:

Small Group Session

10-15 Learners

Often used in a section of a graduate program, this is our most common offering.

The instructor leads the session allowing up to 5 learners to interact with the virtual client during a one hour session.

Lecture Demo Session

For Large Classrooms & Lectures

Lecture demonstrations can be invaluable for students to understand the subtleties of counseling and therapeutic techniques.

Book one of our simulation experts to showcase evidence based practice for your large lecture environment.

1:1 Student Sessions

For Graded Assessments or Capstone Projects

One on One experiences can be used to evaluate the student in a simulated 'client-to-therapist' environment.

We can record the session and send a digital copy to you and the student. The student can create a progress note and a preliminary diagnosis based on the information gleaned from the session.

HOW IT Works - FAQ

How is the simulation conducted?
Typically, the instructor preps the class on the client intake form that is provided in advance. The client appears in the classroom a few minutes early so they can be ready when the instructor formally introduces them to the class.
How long do they last?
The Simulation Experts can be booked for 15, 30 or 60-minute sessions.
How do I integrate virtual patient sessions into my curriculum?
The virtual patient can be used in initial therapeutic practice courses, as well as advanced practicum. They can be used for either assessment or evidence-based interventions. We suggest using them in tandem with our asynchronous content, when possible, to aid in the practice of advanced clinical diagnosis  and as stepping off point for the learner.
What are the benefits to doing virtual patient sessions?
Student can practice the following skills:Conduct an intervention using OARS (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing) to engage, understand and assess the client and their situation. Practice empathy and demonstrate compassion as needed during the session. Validate the client’s emotional experience. Practice cultural competency
Smaller groups are better for intimacy and intimidation can be a factorInstructor demonstration for larger classes. Students observe.
What equipment will I need to conduct virtual patient sessions?
Computer access: Requires strong reliable internet connection , Updated web browser, Zoom application downloaded and installed, Working camera, microphone, headset and speakers
How can I schedule a session?

SMALL GROUP SESSIONS (10-15 learners)

What is a Small Group Session?
Often used in a section of a graduate program, this is our most common offering. The instructor leads the session allowing up to 5 learners to interact with the virtual client during a one hour session. We have designed up to four session scenarios so all of your students can have a chance to practice their skills with the virtual client without having to repeat the same information.
How do small group sessions work?
The instructor will keep track of the time allotted for each learner and will prompt via Zoom Messenger the next student to take over the session. Though there are up to 5 students actively participating in the simulation, the students will not introduce themselves individually, the session is conducted as if by a single practitioner. At the end of 60 minutes, the instructor will end the session and the client will exit the virtual classroom.
How long does a small group session last?
Typically, the 60-minute session is attended by all students in a section.  They take turns working with the client and then turn their cameras off when someone else is taking their turn.  30-minute sessions are more ideal for one-on-one practice.  These exclusive sessions could be assignments for students that can be recorded and reviewed by the instructor later.
How many sessions can we have with each persona/client?
Up to four scenarios have been prepared for each of the Virtual Clients.  These represent the first four therapy sessions with the client.  Additionally, we have created “progress notes” for the first two sessions, which can be used if you wish to skip over the initial intake session and move right into advanced sessions with the client.
Who participates in the session?
The simulation expert (the “client”) and the student – Professors will sit in on sessions as well and be able to break down the process in real time as if it were an in-class role-play assignment. The instructor is also the time keeper to make sure all the participants have equal time with the client.

TECHNICAL & IMPLEMENTATION QUESTIONS

How much does this cost?
Our pricing starts at $450/hour.
How are performers trained to work with my students?
Our simulation experts are academically backed and trained for years. The simulation expert first reads through the training material then meets with the VP of Curriculum to ask any questions about their diagnosis and how it should be portrayed. After which there are multiple rehearsals to make sure the Sim Expert feels comfortable with the material and the types of sample questions they may be asked.
